The Granite Creek Mural Project is a professional
mural on the retaining wall under Bank of America, next to Granite
Creek in downtown Prescott, AZ. The mural is a pictoral history
of Prescott, focusing on the natural and cultural history along
Granite Creek. The center of the mural is the Yavapai Emergence
Story. The time-line moves from the center outwards, like the rings
of a tree. Every bit of the mural was researched by Mile High Middle
School Students, and every inch, down to the baskets and jewelry
on The Yavapai Indians is historically accurate. The mural is approximately
75 feet long, and 11 feet high. The theme of the project is, "Together
We Create Community", and the mural is a gift given to the
community by the community itself. Project Director, Elizabeth Newman,
involved many members of the community so that, literally, hundreds
of people can now look at the finished project with pride and say
"I helped make that happen!"
On this page, you will get an opportunity to meet the students,
and see the project unfold week by week. The students began research
in the last week of February, 2001. Web entries were made weekly
starting March 17.
